How to craft the perfect AI character card

A character card is not just an image. It is a small, complete identity: a portrait, a title, the world the character belongs to, a motto, a set of stats and a rarity tier. The image gives it presence; the text gives it a story worth sharing.

That is why quality depends on two inputs, not one. The photo controls the likeness. The answers control the character. Get one right and the other wrong and the card feels off — a beautiful stranger, or a face you recognize with a personality that is not yours.

The portrait model rebuilds your face from a single photo, so every detail it cannot see is a detail it has to invent. Give it as much real information as possible.

• Front-facing. Look straight at the camera. Extreme angles hide bone structure and the model guesses.
• Soft, even light. A window at midday or open shade beats direct sun. Hard shadows across half your face get baked into the portrait.
• Neutral expression. A relaxed mouth and open eyes read as heroic far more reliably than a wide smile.
• Sharp and high-resolution. Motion blur and heavy compression erase the fine detail that makes a face recognizable.
• Nothing covering the face. No sunglasses, no hands, no hat brim shadowing the eyes, no other people in frame.
• No beauty filters. Smoothing filters delete pores, texture and asymmetry — exactly the features that make the result look like you.

A quick test: if a friend could identify you from the thumbnail at a glance, the model can too.

Each world carries its own visual language, so pick the one whose mood matches the character you want, not just the aesthetic you like most today.

• Viking — weathered, elemental, built for defiance and endurance.
• Samurai — restrained and precise; discipline reads louder than force.
• Fantasy — the widest range, from quiet ranger to crowned monarch.
• Cyberpunk — neon, hard contrast, modern edge; the most striking at small sizes.
• Ancient Egypt — gold, symmetry and ceremony; regal by default.

If you plan to use the card as a profile picture, favour worlds with strong contrast and a clear silhouette — they survive being shrunk to a circle far better.

The Trials are a short set of virtue questions. They are not a personality test for its own sake — the answers feed directly into your title, motto, stat spread and rarity, and they nudge the mood, pose and styling of the portrait.

• Answer honestly, not heroically. Picking the strongest sounding option in every trial produces a flat, maxed-out character. Contrast is what makes a card memorable.
• Let one virtue dominate. Cards built around a single clear trait — cunning, loyalty, defiance — get sharper titles and better mottos than evenly balanced ones.
• Commit to your first instinct. Over-thinking tends to average your answers out, and averaged answers produce generic text.
• Rarity is earned, not chosen. Unusual combinations of answers are what push a card into the higher rarity tiers, so don't chase the obvious option.

When the card lands, judge it in this order: likeness first, then mood, then text. Likeness problems are photo problems — swap the selfie and regenerate. Mood or text problems are answer problems — rerun The Trials with sharper choices.

Every card lives in your library, where you can view it full size, download a high-resolution copy, share it, or regenerate it. Save the versions you like before regenerating so you can compare, and keep the download for anywhere the image will be printed or cropped.

One more habit worth adopting: shoot two or three candidate selfies in different light before you start. Two minutes of extra effort at the photo stage improves the card more than any number of regenerations afterwards.
